Build a Toilet

Sushmasri K, Janice L, Esperanza A

This project is a Virtual Reality game intended to raise awareness about the lack of sanitary toilets in rural areas. We used the A-frame developmental tool that utilized HTML syntax to create our project. This game allows the user to build a toilet by using the cursor and hovering it over the various parts of the toilet.

The problem is that 2.5 billion people in the world don't have access to toilets at all with 1 billion defecating in the open as found by the World Health Organization. This means that there is a large number of girls that stop attending school in their middle school and high school years as toilets simply don't exist(a problem during one's period) and they prefer to simply stay at home. Furthermore, without sanitary toilets people catch diseases like diarrhea much more easily, which can cause death in children.

We have an activity for the viewer to construct the toilet with the parts given in addition to us explaining the situation in the VR game. We also linked some organizations that people can reach out to if they want to get involved.

We didn't know how to get text into the A-frame code at first because we didn't know all the attributes that were needed to create the a-text tag. We got some help from our TAs and searched the web for the right tag format, which did eventually find.

Our group is comprised of 2 seniors and 1 junior all in the Bay Area who came together to tackle a social cause that they were all passionate about and decided to raise awareness for the issue.
