Educate the public about the environmental problems of today

Allie C., Phung P., Claire B.

ECO is a fun and interactive website which informs people of all ages about environmental issues. The highlight of our website is our interactive maps, which show where certain environmental problems occur in the world. These problems include glacier shrinkage, coral reef damage, water pollution, acid rain, extreme weather, and the depletion of the ozone layer.

Over 30% of Americans do not believe in climate change or environmental problems. As there is only one Earth, we want to raise awareness about environmental damage so everyone can do their part to protect the Earth. We have a duty to help the planet because we are responsible for the damage.

ECO is fun to use and easy to understand, which is why it will reach a broad spectrum of people. It targets the topics of polluted water, increased acidity of rain, melting glaciers, bleaching of coral reefs, increase in frequency of extreme weather, and depletion of the ozone layer.

One of the challenges was figuring out a way to use code to color a country affected by a certain issue. After a lot of research, we discovered FusionTables, which allowed us to produce the highlighting you can see on our maps.

"I really like the interactive maps because they provide a lot of information in a clean user interface. This is something that I am very passionate about." -Sieren

The creators of ECO

Allie, Claire, and Phung make up a very diverse group. However, they all foster an interest in helping the environment. Not many people are aware of the environmental damage occurring, so they aim to educate peopleĀ in a fun and interactive way.

This project was made by Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program students at Amazon (Seattle).
